Why?
Most of our rubbish is buried in massive landfill sites. The rest is burnt in hi-tech plants to generate energy. The problem is we don’t have enough facilities to cope with the ever-increasing amount of rubbish. WE CAN’T GO ON LIKE THIS!
There are already over 1500 landfill sites currently in operation, each one taking in an average of nearly 80,000 tonnes of rubbish each year. We’ve got to face up to the fact that we can’t just keep burying our rubbish and hoping it will go away. It won’t. Did you know that every plastic bag buried in landfill takes 500 years to decay? And we use over 150 million plastic bags each week!
The thing is, we need these facilities and many others to manage our rubbish better. The question is, what type do we need? This is where you come in.
The more recycling we all do, the less we will need facilities like landfill or waste-to-energy plants to provide a ‘final’ solution.
While we all continue to consume and generate more and more waste, we’ll need more and more facilities to deal with it. The choice of what type is down to you. Which would you rather live near?
- Recycling facilities
- A landfill site
- A waste-to-energy plant or incinerator.
In the end it’s your action that will decide the issue. You can make a difference if you Rethink your Rubbish.

We keep three separate bins at home for used cans, bottles and paper, then drop them off at the local supermarket recycling banks when we ago shopping. It's really that easy!
I'm a great believer that if everyone did a little, then it would go a long way to help the big problem of rubbish.
