Follow these top ten tips to reduce your mountain of plastic bags:
- Re-use them – remember to take them with you next time you go shopping.
- Return them to be recycled!
i. Safeway and Tescos offer plastic bag recycling facilities, and Sainsbury’s has the Penny Back Scheme, reuse your plastic bag and you’ll get a penny back with the option to donate it to charity.
- Use them as bin liners.
- Place them in the bottom of plant pots and hanging baskets - they act as great drainage systems.
- Put children’s gym kits in to carry them to school.
- Scrunch the bags up to act as great packaging item, better and cheaper than bubble wrap.
- Use them in the garden to put your grass cuttings and hedge trimmings in before emptying them into your compost bin.
- Use them when packing for a holiday to keep dirty/wet clothes and shoes away from dry clothing.
- Use them as ‘poo bags’ when out walking your dog!
- Or even, why not use a canvas shopping bag or a ‘Bag for Life’.
i. Tesco, Waitrose, and Sainsbury’s all offer colourful Bags for Life that cost of 10p and will replace worn bags, for free, for life, which means that you don’t ever need to pick up another plastic carrier bag again!

We keep three separate bins at home for used cans, bottles and paper, then drop them off at the local supermarket recycling banks when we ago shopping. It's really that easy!
I'm a great believer that if everyone did a little, then it would go a long way to help the big problem of rubbish.
