Which retailers are involved?
Some of the best known retail brands have got together to support The Rethink Rubbish Campaign. The list is growing all the time but below are a number of them who are working with us (in alphabetical order) with links to their own websites and recycling tips that you can follow in-store and at home:
Ian Bowles, Environment Manager, says, "We encourage the return of packaging materials by providing recycling facilities at most of our stores. Recycling waste materials diverts them from landfill and therefore provides a more responsible environmental option."
ASDA's policy requires suppliers to design packaging so that it can be, wherever possible, re-used and recycled. The aim of our packaging policy is to minimise the impact on the environment when packaging is disposed of as waste.

Boots has a long history of managing its impacts on the environment and the communities in which it operates, in a responsible manner. Our concern for social and environmental wellbeing, within the broader 'sustainability' agenda, is an integral part of the way we do business.
Ian Blythe, Group Environmental Manager, says: "We all have a part to play, both at work and at home, to minimise consumption of the world's resources and protect the environment for future generations. Boots is particularly pleased to partner the NWAI in raising consumer awareness on preventing waste."

- Bring your old carrier bags and re-use them to carry your shopping
- Use recycling banks at our stores*
- Instead of throwing out your vegetable peels, consider composting them at home.

Wendy Wrigley, General Manager of Retail Brands for the Co-operative Group, says, "We actively encourage our customers to recycle and provide guidance for recycling on Co-op Brand packaging, as well as providing recycling facilities at our stores where we can."
The Co-op's commitment to recycling extends to recycling waste cardboard boxes and shrink wrap from its stores. All packaging is labeled, where appropriate, with packaging types so customers can segregate their waste.

Steve Crewe, Head of Environment, says, "We are committed to working with the NWAI to help inform our consumers as to which materials are recyclable, encourage them to deposit these in appropriate collection facilities and buy products made from recycled materials".
Focus Group policy is to minimise waste through:
- Working with its suppliers to minimise packaging and promote the use of recycled materials.
- Supplying information about recycling to its customers and provide waste recycling banks, encouraging the use of recycled materials and products in its business.
Next time you visit a Focus DIY or Wickes Home Improvement store, make sure you:
- Find out about recycling at home by picking up a Rethink Rubbish leaflet in store.
- Purchase a composting bin to reduce household 'green wastes' going to landfill.
- Recycle materials at the recycling banks provided at stores*

Duggie Brooks, Environmental Manager, says, "Halfords is very pleased to support the Rethink Rubbish campaign. To help improve recycling rates, it is absolutely essential to provide 'jargon free' information to our customers about what to recycle, and where."
As a national retailer, we support recycling in ways that are meaningful to our business and therefore, to our customers. We support a number of initiatives including the National Oil Care Campaign and Greening the High Street. We also offer a car battery take-back service to our customers that diverts around 48,000 batteries for recycling annually.
Next time you visit Halfords, make sure you:
- Return old car batteries to your local Halfords store, as the plastic casing and the lead can be recycled
- Make use of oil recycling banks, an initiative supported by Halfords - to find your nearest facility log on to www.oilbankline.org.uk
- Recycle all your cardboard packaging - check if your area has a kerbside collection scheme or a public recycling facility that can recycle cardboard.

Nicola Ellen, Environment Manager, says. "Since 1971, we have run many consumer environmental campaigns, not least to promote recycling facilities in our car parks and to promote recycled products.
Safeway was a founder member of Valpak, the country's largest packaging compliance scheme, and has a core commitment to environment issues. It was
the first retailer in 1971 to invest in dedicated Resource Recovery Units (RRU) and the first retailer to provide collection points in store for used plastic carrier bags.
Next time you visit Safeway, make sure you:
- Look out for glass and paper recycling facilities on Safeway car parks
- Buy recycled products - including refuse sacks, household kitchen towel and toilet tissue
- Think about carrier bags differently; many Safeway stores now have plastic bag recycling facilities or you can choose one of our strong reusable bags. Re-useable boxes are available at Shop and Go stores.

"Our customers are very keen on recycling and reducing waste. With over
3,500 recycling banks, our Penny Back scheme, which encourages carrier bag
reuse, using design for recycling principles in our packaging and our
biodegradable packaging we are working hard to meet their concerns."
Julie Shrimpton, Communications Manager, says, "Our aim is to reduce our
impact on the environment and this includes minimising waste, seeking to
recover as much as is economically practical and ensure the remainder is
disposed of responsibly. By working with NWAI we want to help our
customers recycle their packaging, buy products made from recycled
products and take responsibility for their rubbish."
Next time you are in Sainsbury’s look out for:
- The Pennyback Scheme & Bags for Life - reuse a bag and we'll give a penny back or donate it to charity. Our Bags for Life cost 10p. With Pennyback, if a customer uses a Bag for Life 10 times, it will have paid for itself!
- Biodegradable packaging on organics - we were the first retailer to introduce this after 8 years of research. Ideal for composting when you've finished with the packaging!
- The Revive Range of products like stationery & bin bags are made with a high recycled content to help drive markets for products like second hand plastics.
Nick Jones, Assistant to General Manager (Services), says, "The need for a central message is long overdue - the consumer needs one message that they can relate to and understand. Waitrose supports any drive to improve understanding for our customers."
The Waitrose Technical Policy states that our packaging must be designed
and produced to permit its reuse or recovery, including recycling. Packaging must also be the minimum adequate to maintain the necessary level of safety, hygiene and acceptance.

We keep three separate bins at home for used cans, bottles and paper, then drop them off at the local supermarket recycling banks when we ago shopping. It's really that easy!
I'm a great believer that if everyone did a little, then it would go a long way to help the big problem of rubbish.
