Waitrose has linked its can recycling programme to the Alupro sponsored, tree planting scheme, backed by Rethink Rubbish

Industry organisation Alupro has promised to arrange for a native tree to be planted for every tonne of alucans and foil recycled in the UK during the year. If the 35, 000 tree target is reached by the end of June, recyclers will be helping to plant enough trees to cover over 900 football pitches when fully grown. A fantastic legacy for the recycling habit!

Recyclers can deposit their cans in the specially-branded ‘Get Recycling‘ can banks at Waitrose stores.

Nick Jones, Waitrose Assistant to the General Manager, says: “Waitrose has offered its customers recycling facilities in co-operation with local authorities for many years, it is hoped this support will increase recycling levels of aluminium cans and benefit the environment through Alupro’s tree planting scheme. We are pleased to offer support where we are able to do so.”

Over 300 local councils which have signed up to the appeal will be receiving a tree for every tonne of alucans recycled in their area, and there will also be regional plantings arranged with the Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity.
